Winter Advisers’ Seminar

Mark Newton

JEA President Mark Newton will be the featured speaker at the 2012 Winter Advisers’ Seminar March 2 and 3, to be held at the Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

A 24-year veteran of scholastic journalism, Mark advises the Eagle Eye newspaper and Aerie yearbook at Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. He is the former JEA Certification Commission chairperson, former JEA Southwest Region 2 director and JEA Colorado state director.

Newton is co-founder and co-leader of the National Journalism Professional Learning Community. He also serves on the Advisory Council of the Student Press Law Center. Newton is a JEA Medal of Merit recipient and NSPA Pioneer.

His publications have received NSPA Pacemaker news magazine and online, CSPA Gold Crown, and NSPA Best of Show top ten awards.

  • Early registration (before February 6) is $85 per participant (with an additional $35 for each additional dinner guest).
  • Late registration is $95 (with an additional $35 for each additional dinner guest).

  • On Friday, sessions are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with appropriate time for meals, breaks, check-in, etc. Registration is at 9 a.m.
  • After a social hour and dinner on Friday (included with the registration fee), participants engage in a memento exchange, involving items from their schools – such as t-shirts, caps, etc.
  • Participants are also asked to bring copies of their publications for browsing or exchange.

KEMPA is a registered professional development provider with the Illinois State Board of Education. The Winter Seminar earns Illinois teachers seven CPDUs towards recertification.
